Magnolia National, Georgia (2016)

Designer: Craig LeVasseur

Course Description:

My Saturday edition of Magnolia National. Features an assortment of different pins, and in my opinion has some of the tougher pins of all 4 days. An afternoon sun frames the setting for a late Saturday run at making the final pairing for Sunday.

Magnolia was a wonderful experience. It shows how a course can be made difficult without having to result to small greens that have hard firmness.  The lay out of each fairway with their slight undulations to severe slopes challenges the golfer's approach shot on just about every hole.  Various elevation changes increase the need for accuracy on most holes.

The greens, while receptive to most short to mid-ranged irons are equally undulated as the fairways. Picking the right spot to land an approach shot is crucial.  From subtle changes to severe slopes, these fast greens places a premium on accurate putting.  Speed control is essential, lest the wary golfer will find himself with a putt rolling much further than intended down to the front of the green or worse in a green side bunker.

The multiple pin and tee placements ensures the golfer a fair opportunity at birdies each round, while putting an emphasis on the notion that par is a good score on many of these holes that shouldn't be challenged.  There are plenty of risk/reward opportunists, usually materializing on the Par 5's. It is a course with teeth.  Concentration is key, else a golfer can find themselves in a situation where a birdie putt turns into a bogey or worse.

Golfers shouldn't expect to tame Magnolia.  As noted earlier, each round has its birdie holes, and a golfer needs to capitalize on those, minimize costly mistakes and hopefully make up a few strokes with excellent putting.  This is a course that demands respect.

Great course, really captures the feel of the real life course as much as it is possible in the game. The only let downs are not something the designer can do anything about, having no crowds kills the atmosphere slightly but all in all a great course :)

If you struggle with the short game, lookout.

Loved this edition of this course greens are holdable but does not give up the toughness of the Augusta greens and emphasis on short game. Fairways are undulating and smoothe this is the best recreation of Augusta I have saw. Tough course but birdies are extremely rewarding. I limped to a +2 had my short game not let me down I could have been 4-5 under par. Definite birdie opportunities on most all holes went thru first 5 at -3 tough streak until 12 then 13-17 had a streak of birdies. Most enjoyable round I've played in a long time. Excellent course!! Highly recommended!
