Congressional is a course that I become enamored with for a little while, and then upon further review as the PGA Tour resumed regular stops there, started to reveal itself as a kind of bland country club design, with just a few exciting holes around the clubhouse. I think my opinion of the course design is only slightly elevated after my round here, but I do have a newfound appreciation for these greens. They lack the outright severity that you may find on other real courses (and for sure will find on fictional courses), but the constant motion of the greens makes it difficult to place a ball next to the pin, and every putt requires careful attention.

In windy conditions, this course requires the outright concentration that you might find necessary at a major tournament.

From a technical standpoint, there is absolutely nothing here to criticize. The contours are those of a now seasoned veteran in the GNCD, with great bunker sculpting and superb attention to detail. And of course, the greens are masterful.

(Saturday version played) An accurate real life recreation of Congressional Country Club (Blue Course) that both looks and plays great, and I know from experience just how much time and effort it takes to achieve that. Everything is smoothly sculpted, the planting and other additional features are used perfectly and the elevation changes are used to show this all off to full effect.

There are only two minor issues preventing this from scoring a perfect 10. Firstly there are a couple of pins cut a little too close to yellow slopes and secondly the fairways are set firmer than the greens (a pet peeve of mine I know!). For about 16 of the 18 holes neither of these are an issue but on the odd occasion my ball landed a yard or two short of the green it was jarring to see it bounce on and leave me a 50+ putt.
